Kawempe, Uganda
In a shocking development, reports emerging from Kawempe indicate that several journalists covering the ongoing by-election were allegedly assaulted, harassed, and had their equipment confiscated by members of the security forces on patrol. The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear, but concerns are growing over the rising tensions between security personnel and the media.
In response, the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) has launched an official investigation into the incident, vowing to take appropriate disciplinary measures where necessary. The army reaffirmed its commitment to protecting press freedom and rebuilding trust between security forces and journalists.
“We take our relationship with the media very seriously and will do our utmost to restore confidence as quickly as possible,” a UPDF statement read.
The security forces also acknowledged the role of the press in ensuring transparency and peaceful governance, calling for better coordination to prevent such incidents in the future. However, they warned that lawbreakers—whether civilians or members of the security services—will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
