Gulu, Uganda – March 10, 2025 – Acoli leader Sebastian Ogoni, also known as Okello Samuel Sebbi, has issued a passionate call to the people of Acoli and the broader Luo nation ahead of a critical court ruling in Gulu.
Ogoni, who is widely recognized for his advocacy in defending Acoli ancestral land, revealed that the Grade 1 Court in Gulu is set to deliver a verdict tomorrow, March 11, 2025, in a case filed by the Balalo community. The Balalo have accused him and other community members of inciting violence against them.
In a statement released today, Ogoni emphasized that this legal battle extends beyond himself, saying:
"Members, I would like to notify you that tomorrow, March 11, 2025, the Grade 1 Court in Gulu will render a decision in a case filed by the Balalo, alleging that I and other members at large incited violence against them. I am calling on you all to attend the court because this is not just about me, but also about the entire Acoli people who are fighting to defend our ancestral land."
He further rallied support, urging all those who can to be present at the court proceedings, stating that “the battle of Balalo against one Acoli is a battle against the entire Acoli and Luo nation at large.”
Ogoni also appealed to media outlets to cover the proceedings, ensuring transparency and widespread awareness of the case’s outcome.
This ruling is expected to have far-reaching implications, not only for Ogoni and his co-accused but also for the ongoing land disputes between the Acoli and Balalo communities.
The case has reignited tensions over land rights in northern Uganda, with Acoli leaders expressing concerns over encroachment on their ancestral land. The outcome could set a precedent for future land conflicts in the region.
All eyes will be on the Gulu court tomorrow as the community awaits a decision that could shape the future of land ownership and indigenous rights in Uganda.
