In a bold move to revitalize its transportation sector, the Government of Uganda (@GovUganda) is spearheading the revival of the railway network, a critical step towards decongesting roads, reducing wear and tear on highways, and fostering efficient cargo movement. Under the leadership of @RailwaysUganda, significant milestones have already been achieved, with ongoing rehabilitation projects transforming the nation's railway landscape.
🚊 Mukono–Malaba Line: The Backbone of Cargo Movement
By 2018, the 234-kilometer Mukono–Malaba line was in a state of disrepair, unable to meet the rising demand for cargo transport. Rehabilitation efforts began in 2022, and by 2023, this vital railway section was fully operational.
Today, the line is a lifeline for commerce, moving over 25,000 tonnes of cargo monthly, a monumental leap from the stagnation of 2018. With projections to increase capacity to 70,000 tonnes per month within the next five years, this railway corridor is set to become a powerhouse for regional trade, connecting Uganda to Kenya and beyond.
🚊 Kampala–Mukono Line: Speed Meets Modernity
The recently completed 26.8-kilometer Kampala–Mukono line represents a significant upgrade in Uganda’s rail infrastructure. Capable of supporting train speeds of up to 120 km/h, this line is a marked improvement from the older system, which managed speeds of only 20-35 km/h. This modernized route not only enhances the efficiency of passenger and cargo transport but also serves as a blueprint for future railway projects in Uganda.
🚊 Tororo–Gulu Line: A Gateway to Regional Trade
The 382-kilometer Tororo–Gulu line, which spans key towns including Mbale, Soroti, and Lira, is undergoing a major rehabilitation project that began in 2023. This initiative is a government-funded effort aimed at enhancing Uganda's competitiveness by improving infrastructure critical to regional trade.
The line is strategically significant for goods destined for South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, two of Uganda’s key trading partners. The Gulu Logistics Hub, a focal point of this project, is expected to streamline cargo handling and distribution across the region, cementing Uganda’s position as a hub for East African trade.
The Vision Ahead
The revival of Uganda’s railway sector is a testament to the government’s commitment to sustainable economic growth. By modernizing old railway lines and enhancing transport efficiency, Uganda is positioning itself as a regional leader in logistics and commerce.
As these projects continue to take shape, they promise to transform not only the transportation landscape but also the livelihoods of millions who rely on the efficient movement of goods and services.
