Tragic UXO Claims Life in Lamwo District

Lamwo, Uganda – March 15, 2025 – A tragic incident unfolded yesterday at approximately 1600 hours in Nimu Village, Pawo West Parish, Lukungu Sub-County, Lamwo District, when a civilian lost her life due to an unexploded ordnance (UXO) left behind from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency.

The victim, identified as Mrs. Ayao Esther, 47, was tending to her garden when the explosive device detonated, causing fatal injuries. Her body has since been transported to Lamwo Health Centre for a postmortem examination.

Reacting to the incident, Major General Keith Katungi, Commander of the 5th Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), extended his condolences to the bereaved family. He urged residents to exercise caution and report any suspicious objects resembling ordnance to security forces. "Vigilance is key to preventing further tragedies," he emphasized.

The UPDF has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of Ugandans and their property, vowing to intensify efforts in clearing remnants of past conflicts.

Authorities continue to urge communities in formerly war-affected areas to remain alert and cooperate with security forces in identifying and safely disposing of such dangerous remnants of war.
